The things that make this time of the year so magical-festive decorations, family gatherings, and gift-giving-can also generate loads of garbage. Think disposable decorations, excess packaging, and leftover food. Lash out in a new way this season with a sustainable Christmas, enabling you to celebrate without ruining the planet. Hosting a sustainable Christmas is great. Here are eight practical tips for a greener holiday.

1. Use Eco-Friendly Christmas Decoration

Decorating is such a highlight of the season, but single-use items usually are taken to landfills thereafter. So why not try taking a more sustainable approach to Christmas decoration this year with natural or reusable decorations?

Use Natural Materials

These natural materials add a touch of natural beauty to your home: pinecones, branches, dried oranges, and berries. The good thing about them is that they are truly biodegradable and can be composted once the holiday is over. Fashion wreaths out of fresh greenery or put branches and pinecones in a vase for that cozy natural touch.

Think about reusing things you may have or make some ornaments yourself. Last year, I made ornaments out of fabric scraps and old holiday cards. It added a personal touch to our tree and recycled materials that would have been thrown away. Another area in which we can reduce our waste is gift wrapping. Most wrapping papers are not recyclable because of coatings, glitters, or plastic additives, meaning they land in the trash. Here is how to wrap your gifts sustainably this year.

Wrap gifts in cloths, such as cotton or linen, that can be reused. The Japanese art of furoshiki, or wrapping items in fabric, adds elegance to gifts and might even be used year after year. Even kitchen towels or scarves can serve as wrappings and become part of the gift themselves.

Get Creative with Recyclable Materials

If you’re more conventionally inclined, use brown kraft paper that is recyclable and lends a rustic charm. Tie up with twine and embellish with a sprig of greenery for a festive, eco-friendly look. I have also used old maps, newspapers, and reusable gift bags-all surprisingly stylish and economical on waste.

Reuse Gift Bags and Boxes

Save gift bags, ribbons, and boxes from the previous year for reuse. It is one of the easiest ways to reduce waste while still looking great on your gifts. Moreover, it will help you make full use of what you already have at home.

It is a very beautiful way to enjoy the season, stay active, and create lasting memories. Last year, my family went on a mission to gather pinecones and made our own holiday decor from them, making our home uniquely festive.
